Goals of Mathematics

I was looking at the Introduction to the Manitoba Curriculum in Mathematics recently and found a very interesting explanation of the goals.

Goals for Students
The main goals of mathematics education are to prepare students to:
1. communicate and reason mathematically
2. use mathematics confidently, accurately, and efficiently to solve problems
3. appreciate and value mathematics
4. make connections between mathematical knowledge and skills and their applications
5. commit themselves to lifelong learning
6. become mathematically literate citizens, using mathematics to contribute to society and to think critically about the world

I sometimes wonder if these were as well thought out when I was in primary school. Doubt it.

The Great Escape

Room 4 just completed The Reindeer Games (The Great Escape) in 41 minutes. We had to find clues to solve 6 puzzles. It was troubling, but fun. The class broke into groups to tackle the different puzzles. After opening the final puzzle lock, the class was rewarded with a free movie coupon. Way to go gang! The challenge is out for Room s 3 & 5 to complete the puzzles.

Thank you to all the families who were able to make it out for our Triad Conferences. The students were proud to share their learning from our first term. personally, it was great to see many of you again and to even meet some of you for the first time. If you were unable to make it, please feel free to drop in and look around at the amazing things the students of Room 4 are doing this year.

2 Weeks in...

We've been busy for the first two weeks of school. We have been learning about our school-wide and classroom expectations.  It's been busy playing around and working hard. We’ve played outside a few times as a whole class – Grounders, Kickball, Marco Polo, and Basketball. Inside, we’ve had some fun playing Math Playground games and drama games. Not all of our time has been spent playing though. Every day,  we have done a lot of writing – lists, free writing, t-charts, some story writing, and some song writing. Math has also been a daily activity. Room 4 is looking forward to having a fun year learning.

We Are All Leaders

The grade 4/5 team met today and learned about being school wide leaders.  We learned about the importance of taking some responsibility in the school to help out other students. There are patrols, recess ambassadors, library and music helpers, bike club leaders, assembly leaders, art designers, Grade 1gurus, and Kindergarten Keepers - something for everyone. We are excited to get the year started and do our part to help out.

Welcome Back

Welcome back to the 2016-2017 school year. I am excited to start the year off in a new classroom (Room 4), with a new group of grade 4's, and my returning grade 5's. This year our class will have some pretty exciting learning experiences. I know that we will all settle in and have lots of fun. I look forward to seeing you at our Conferences next week. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me. Shawn Trembath

As our school year winds down, our class continues to do amazing things. The students have been sharing their research projects that they have been working on. We've seen dramatic presentations, slideshows, games, and even a scavenger hunt to share our learning. There is no denying the hard work the students have put into their studies this year. I am personally so proud of what they have done (and continue to do). I have learned so much from them and feel that our future will be in good hands.

Over the next couple of weeks, we will be spending a lot of time outdoors. We hope to experience and learn about nature. There is always enough screen time; now we will enjoy the surround sound beauty that nature will offer us. We'll share pictures as we shift our learning outdoors. Staty tuned.

Mr. T

Should 7-10 year olds be playing violent video games?

BANG!BANG! "YEAH so cool" BANG!

Should 7-10 year olds be playing violent games? In the olden days, kids were playing outside and now kids are staring at a screen. Kids shouldn't be playing violent games because it could traumatize them. If kids now keep playing inappropriate games, what will they do when they're older. If you are a parent, how would you feel if your child or children grow up to be the video game they play? How much do our games influence us?

Grow up to be a happy kid.

Sabre Saves

Hello Stevenson families,

Rooms 11 and 12 are proud to present Spirit Week March 21-24, 2016! We are raising money for D’Arcy’s A.R.C, a no kill animal shelter located at 730B Century St. D’Arcy’s A.R.C rescues animals from the streets, homelessness and from situations of abuse. Every animal rescued at D’Arcy’s A.R.C gets neutered or spayed, and is seen by a veterinarian to make sure they are healthy and safe.

Sabre Saves presents Spirit Week!

In support of D’Arcy’s A.R.C

On Monday, it is Manitoba Monday. Dress in red and white. We will be selling freshly baked peanut free cookies. The cookies will contain eggs and dairy. We will be baking the cookies and decorating them ourselves!

$0.50/cookie

Tuesday is Toucan Tuesday! Dress in as many colors as you can. We will be selling bagged candy.

$1.00/bad

10 candies / bag

Wednesday is Waggin Wednesday! Dress as an animal. You can wear face paint, ears, costumes, or animal print clothes. Please make sure it is appropriate. We will be selling bags of chips.

$1.00 / bag of chips

On Thursday it will be DJ Thursday! Dress in cool clothes and be ready to dance! We will have a dance party in the gym and there will be some snacks for sale as well

Please feel free to send in any unused dog or cat toys for us to bring to the shelter to help keep the animals happy.

All week long we will be having a kitty litter drive. D’Arcy’s A.R.C uses a lot of kitty litter, and this issomething they need all of the time. Please send in a bag of clumping, unscented kitty litter and we will bring it all to D’Arcy’s A.R.C.

Prices for our treats are the minimum price, but if you want to pay more and help donate more money, that would be awesome! The more money we raise, the more we can help the animals at D’Arcy’s A.R.C.

We have been working very hard to plan and prepare for this week, and are so excited. Thank you for all of your support!

Sincerely,

Room 11 and 12

Human body

In our class we are learning about the human body. We've had a test and learned about all of the systems. We learned all about how the systems work together to keep our body alive. We learned all the different body parts that we will not mention in this blog.😉 Mr.T has taught us about all of the systems including the skeletal system and without it you would become a puddle of skin and flesh. The human body is a fascinating learning experience. By:BAILEY & DAVID.

Our Needs!

Fun, freedom, power, love, and survival are 5 things we need live. Every person has a main need. Ours were Power and Love. We learned this with Ruth Hargrave. She taught us everything about this we really enjoyed it.  We then drew out our hands  and stapled them to the BIG class hand! What do you think your main need is?

Art Class

Last week or so we did really cool art. We did it with Qu-tips and paint. It looks really good. We really enjoy doing art. Do you?

HYDRATION WEEK

For hydration week, we all have a water drinking goal. The grade Ks and 1s  are to drink 1-500ml bottle of water. The grade 2s and 3s goal is to drink 2-500 ml bottles of water and the grade 4s and 5s goal is 3-500ml bottles of water. So far, most of the students in Mr. Trembath's class are reaching their daily goals . Each day we reach our goal, we get a ticket that gets put into a draw. At the end of the week, someone will win a reusable water bottle. Hope you(we) have fun!

Wellness month

January is Wellness Month. In grade 4/5, we have to drink 3-500 ml water bottles each day. If we drink three, we get entered into a draw. The winner gets a reusable water bottle. We have pee charts that are going to be posted in the bathrooms. It tells us if we are hydrated or not.

Why not try the Hydration Challenge with us?
